1. A Note to Cheyanne by Ron White

This is something I wrote to my 4 year old cousin Cheyanne when I was 30 years old. I have edited it and placed it in this newsletter for the lesson that we as adults can learn from her.

Cheyanne,

If we stay as good of friends as we are now, I know you will read this one day. You said something in the car that made me think. I asked you if you were looking forward to preschool starting.

'No!'

'Cheyanne, why not? Don't you want to meet some friends and have some kids at your birthday party? All you know is adults.'

'I don't want friends at school. I want friends at McDonalds!'

It brought our conversation to an abrupt halt. Because, Cheyanne, I am a 30 year old man and sometimes I don't want friends at school either. I also want friends at McDonald's.

There have been times in my life when I chased the McDonald's friends. To this day, women from McDonald's still cause my head to turn. Sometimes I let the happy meal distract me, instead of the delayed gratification of the degree. Sometimes friends from McDonald's seem fun and carefree and friends from school seem boring.

Of course, these are metaphors and I am not talking about fast food or degrees. Cheyanne, it is the same at 4 as it is 30. Human nature tells us that we need what is on the other side, the forbidden, or what doesn't take much effort. Human nature tells us that what takes work and moves slower can't be fun. But, that is wrong.

Life is no happy meal. It isn't instant gratification. It takes the discipline of school but the reward is so much more than a chocolate sundae and a Hamburgler slide.

Cheyanne, I hope that you want the friends it is initially hard to want. I pray that you want the friends who will be there when the happy meal is over and will walk with you towards faithfulness, self control, success, hope, hard work, goal-setting, focus, self-discipline, honesty, integrity and love.

I don't claim to be a wise man, a poet or a saint. But, my heart beats as loud as thunder for the things that I believe and I believe to my core that delayed gratification is the hardest thing to teach – yet one of life’s most important lessons.

I love you very much Cheyanne. I have 26 years on you and I struggle with the same thing. However, who you surround yourself with will determine the outcome of your life. Make the choices VERY carefully.

You have to live with the choices you make.

Your Favorite Cousin,
Ronnie

2. Quotes of The Week

"If it is not right do not do it; if it is not true do not say it." -- Marcus Aurelius

"Character is not a commodity that can be purchased. It is built by the decisions you permanently chisel on your heart. Strive for a reputation that will cause people to say, 'He means what he says.'" - Neil Eskelin

"I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do! That is character!" -- Theodore Roosevelt

"I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death." -- Thomas Paine

"My preferred person today is one who is always aware of the needs of others, or their pain and fear and unhappiness, and their search for self-respect. I once liked clever people. Now I like good people." -- Soloman Freehof

"I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." -- Martin Luther King, Jr.

3. Special Guest Article - Are You a Hunter or Fisherman? by Chris Widener

This week I'm including a short but powerful article from Chris Widener. I've known Chris for the last 5 years and consider him a good friend and colleague. This past week, he just released an 8-CD program titled, The Secrets of Influence - 12 Characteristics of Dynamic Leaders, Sales People and Top Performers. This is definitely a program you want to add to your library. If you like the article and want more information about Chris' Secrets of Influence Program, scroll down to #4 below or visit http://influence.jimrohn.com or call 800-929-0434. Enjoy! -- RW

Are You a Hunter or Fisherman? by Chris Widener

Jim Rohn says, "Success is not to be pursued; it is to be attracted by the person you become." So I have an interesting question for you (and for the moment it may seem completely unrelated, but stick with me...): Are you a hunter or a fisherman?

Now let me explain: Last week as I spoke to a group of about 100 business people, we looked at a theme I frequently speak about: Hunting and Fishing. No, not actual hunting and fishing; but instead the analogy that hunting and fishing provides us as it relates to success in general, and leadership and influence specifically. You see, there are two kinds of people: those who hunt (and are constantly tracking down success), and those who fish (or let success and leadership come to them).

So in our analogy, let me tell you why fishing is better. Fishing is about attraction. It is about magnetically having success and influence come to you. When you are hunting, everything just runs away!

How do you fish rather than hunt? Good question. Fishing is all about presenting great bait. So what is the bait? YOU! That is why personal development is so important. The more we improve, the more attractive we become to others and to success! We should make it an everyday goal to develop ourselves and improve so as to become the best people we can be. As we do that, we will begin to see success come our way with less effort than if we just sat in the same old spot personally all the time.

Take some time each day, beginning with this ezine edition, to improve yourself, and become a fisher of success and influence!

You Are Made for Success!
Chris Widener
