White's Ezine
June 15, 2006 Issue 21
Welcome!
This week my hometown basketball team is playing in the NBA Finals. I
will confess that I have only been to a handful of professional
basketball games, not clear on all the rules and couldn't name more than
two or three of the Dallas Mavericks. With that said, I have gotten
caught up in the basketball fever that has swept my town. So much so
that I played basketball with a group of friends this past weekend.
By way of background, I workout and play sports with this group on a
regular basis. I humbly tell you that several in the group (of about 50)
have said I am by far the best athlete in the group. This is a high
compliment and one that I am proud to get. The past few years we have
played football, lifted weights and participated in organized running
(things that I am good at). I have felt like an Olympic athlete often
when competing against my middle-aged friends. Then it happened.... I
was humbled... In our non-stop 45 minute game of basketball, I made only
one shot. This shot was when the other team was in possession of the
ball, therefore it counted for their team.
Men I normally run circles around were playing a sport foreign to me and
stomping me! I was pathetically horrible. Rarely did my shots even hit
the rim and I am fairly sure Ray Charles would have gotten closer to the
basket than I did with his shots. I don't think there is a girls 6th
grade basketball player that couldn't have outplayed me. As I drove away
humiliated and humble I thought, "It is so good to be humbled." I was
glad to be humbled because:
1. It meant I was attempting something out of my comfort zone and trying
something new. It meant I was brave enough to do something I wasn't good
at.
2. I would put in more work to get better to avoid future embarrassment.
3. It was keeping me humble. The last thing I need is to think that I
don't need to get any better. We all need to get better and no one likes
arrogance.
If you aren't being humbled in some way this week... you are not
stepping out of your comfort zone. Make a fool out of yourself and enjoy
how good you feel about it afterwards!

1. You Are In My House – Becoming a
Dynamite Public Speaker! by Ron White
They say that the number one fear in America is the fear of public
speaking. That is a pretty surprising statistic to me – someone who
earns his living as a public speaker. They say that 43.5% of all
statistics are made up on the spot, however, I would gamble that this
statistic on public speaking is the truth. There is something about
facing your peers or even strangers when every eye in the room is on
you. Some thrive under this spotlight and others crumble.
The very same statistic that tells us that the number one fear in
America is the fear of public speaking tells us that the number two fear
on that survey was death. Can you believe that? More people are afraid
of speaking in front of a group than dying! Pretty amazing… I guess that
means if you are going to the funeral, more people would rather be in a
casket than giving the eulogy. Well, at any rate there are proven
methods to decrease your fear of public speaking and significantly
improve your performance.
The first key is confidence when speaking. It doesn’t matter if you are
giving a Top Secret military briefing to high ranking officers or a
speech to your local rotary club – the speaker who exudes confidence
will garner the attention of everyone in the room. The attitude and
belief that I remind myself of when I speak is that everyone listening
to my speech is in my house. I am in control. This is my forum. I own
the stage. I walk to the stage as if I own, my voice is loud and clear
as if I own it and mentally I do because again it is my house.
Confidence can cover a multitude of negative speaking habits such as 'uhhmms'
'ahhs' and other nervous ticks. As a matter of fact, when you are
speaking with confidence these become irrelevant unless blatantly
distracting. The next question is - how does one gain confidence as a
speaker? One of the best ways to become a more confident speaker is to
know your material inside and out. When a speaker gives a presentation
and it is obvious that he has not taken the time to know his material
inside and out, it is a slap in the face to the audience. It is a subtle
communication to the audience that the speaker did not value the time of
the audience. This is a cardinal sin of many inexperienced speakers -
refuse to allow yourself to make it. When it is your time to speak, know
your material.
Next, do not read your speech word for word. A speech that is read is
dull, boring and canned. Instead, use a small note card with bullet
points to guide your talk. I must confess that even this is not the
optimal. I choose to memorize the bullet points so I am free to roam the
platform and not be restricted by a podium. You will find the most
inexperienced speakers follow the same pattern. I for one, have a memory
system that enables me to memorize points of a speech. I encourage you
to investigate your own memory method or one of an accepted memory
trainer.
Another strategy in owning the ‘You are in my house’ attitude when
speaking is that of making eye contact. The speaker who avoids eye
contact is not trusted by the audience. The group wonders what he is
hiding. Recently I spoke for 4,000 people. Was I able to make eye
contact with 4,000? No I wasn’t. However, I was able to lock eyes with a
few on the first few rows and look out over the entire audience. Looking
someone in the eye conveys confidence and honesty. This is true in
public speaking as well. An easy habit as a public speaker to fall into
is that of focusing on one side of the audience or one person.
Consciously remind yourself that you need to scan the audience and talk
equally to all portions of the group. A technique to help yourself would
be to pretend you are talking to just one person in the group. This is a
great technique if the group is very large, you can pull it off if the
person is in the middle of the group. However, if in a large group and
off to the side it is not practical and in a small group also become
obvious. Remember to share the eye contact.
In conclusion, when speaking:
Bring the ‘You are in my house attitude’.
Exude confidence
Prepare and practice
Never read your speech word for word
Memorize your key points
Make eye contact
Follow these simple steps and I look forward to being in your house one
day as you deliver a dynamite talk!

2. Quotes of
The Week
GOALS
"All things are created twice. There's a mental or first creation, and a
physical or second creation of all things. You have to make sure that
the blueprint, the first creation, is really what you want, that you've
thought everything through. Then you put it into bricks and mortar. Each
day you go to the construction shed and pull out the blueprint to get
marching orders for the day. You begin with the end in mind." -- Stephen
Covey
"Meeting a goal takes dedication, effort and sacrifice and all that it
takes to turn a goal into a dream is TIME." -- Craig Lock
"Goals are new, forward-moving objectives. They magnetize you towards
them." -- Mark Victor Hansen
"Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe and
enthusiastically act upon must inevitably come to pass." -- Paul J.
Meyer
"In the long run, men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, they had
better aim at something high." -- Henry David Thoreau
"If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If
you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever
good things we build end up building us." -- Jim Rohn
"Circumstances may cause interruptions and delays, but never lose sight
of your goal. Prepare yourself in every way you can by increasing your
knowledge and adding to your experience, so that you can make the most
of opportunity when it occurs." -- Mario Andretti
"The victory of success is half won when one gains the habit of setting
goals and achieving them. Even the most tedious chore will become
endurable as you parade through each day convinced that every task, no
matter how menial or boring, brings you closer to fulfilling your
dreams." -- Og Mandino
3. The Anatomy of Goal Getting by Jeffery Combs
Write your goals down, put them on paper, visualize them, romance
them, smell them, feel them, touch them, and believe in them. This is
good standard information that we are taught when it comes to goal
setting. This type of goal setting is practical and informational. My
question is, if this information is correct, why do so few people reach
and achieve their goals in life? Why is it that only seven percent of
America achieves a six figure income? Why is it that only one-twentieth
of one percent of the households in America has a net worth of one
million dollars?
It is much more normal and accepted to be average than exceptional in
our society. This is why each year on December 31st a large percent of
our nation sets new goals, resolutions, and declarations. Two very
common goals are "I want to lose weight and make more money in the next
year." Go to any health club in January, February, and March and they
are usually crowded with people determined to make good on their New
Year's resolution, but go back in April, May, June, or any of the summer
months, and you will notice a large drop off in attendance. The reason
for the sudden decline is simply motivation. We are all motivated. We
want more mores; more personal time, more money, more freedom, more
family time, and more opportunities. We want, wish, like to, hope, plan
to, need, and many other words that really mean, "I am not committed!"
Self-motivation is key number one when it comes to goal getting, not
just goal setting. As a personal success coach and mentor, I have had
the privilege of personally coaching over fifteen hundred clients and
devoting over nine thousand hours to understanding why people do what
they do or don't do what they set out to do. I see far too many people
set huge and giant goals as new entrepreneurs without really
understanding what it will take to bring these aspirations to fruition.
I am a big advocate of daring to step out of the box and dream big in
any situation. Setting lofty goals is great! It's great to dream big but
to achieve your goals; your action has to match your dream!
Action is key number two. Action is simple discipline practiced over a
period of time to create results. As entrepreneurs we do not get paid
for time, results are what we get paid for. When you are new and
unskilled as an entrepreneur your results are often intangible in the
beginning and slowly become tangible (those you see) over time. This is
the phase where most people give up on their dreams if they don't see
immediate results.
In order to become a successful entrepreneur, you have to be willing to
give yourself room to succeed, not to fail. It typically takes the
average person two to five years to get comfortable with a new process
like entrepreneurship. For most, it is unfamiliar, unknown, and a lot of
their time is spent in the land of "What if?" What if I succeed? What if
I fail? What if they laugh at me? What if it works? What if it doesn't?
What if no one signs up with me? What if I go broke? What if my life
changes? What if I can't pay my bills? What if I can't prospect? What if
I'm not perfect? What if I don’t know all the answers to my prospects'
questions? What if my partner or spouse thinks this is a scam? What if I
have to go get a job again? Remember, there is never any reward without
risk.
I suggest that you begin to break your goals down into bite-sized chunks
rather than setting a giant goal that seems unattainable or
insurmountable. I see so many "want to be success seekers" set goals
that are so big that they become excuses to procrastinate instead of
produce results. Instead, set smaller goals for a day, a week, a month,
and a quarter. I teach people how to goal get, not just goal set.
If your objective is to achieve a six figure income this year it is
important to have a plan of action for how to get there. Break this goal
down into the action that when performed daily will create the six
figure income you seek. This means achieving an average of two hundred
seventy-seven dollars a day to achieve a six figure income in a three
hundred sixty-five day period. If your objective is to achieve a seven
figure income this year, you will be required to achieve an average of
three thousand dollars a day within a three hundred sixty-five day
period to achieve your objective. These are examples of breaking down a
financial objective within a stated time frame.
Keep goal setting simple and don't spend a lot of time writing down your
goals. Start with a day, a week, and a month as opposed to a major
lifetime objective. Instead, focus the greatest amount of your time and
energy performing the action that will bring the greatest return now. I
call this "revenue producing activity." Exceptional people understand
that they get paid for results, not time. This principle called turning
time into results is the key to becoming a successful entrepreneur. This
is true goal getting, not goal setting.
