Ron
White's Ezine
September 13, 2006 Issue 27
Welcome!
I was watching a documentary on San Quentin prison and I gleaned a
pearl of wisdom from a man doing life without parole. He was asked if he
had to mentally 'get ready' when he went into the workout yard to be
ready to defend himself. His reply was, 'If you stay ready... you don't
have to get ready.'
That is profound. Let me say it again - 'If you stay ready... you don't
have to get ready.'
Every March, I see many entering rigid workout programs to be in
summertime weight and condition by June. Then when mid September rolls
around they lose their enthusiasm and the weight finds its way back to
their waist. In reality, they are having to workout so much harder in
April, May and June because they are shedding fat and starting all over
again. If instead, they stayed in shape they would have to work out much
less during April, May and June.
Another way to look at it is that if you let your yard get weeds and
long grass it is going to take a major effort to get it looking good. On
the other hand, if you just do a little bit everyday you never have to
go through the major overhaul ordeal.
Here is the lesson - it is less work to maintain than to 'get ready'. In
your life do not allow the weeds to set in. Instead, make the effort to
do a little each day to stay ready and then you will never have to get
ready.

1. The Second Law of Thermal Dynamics by Ron White
It is called The Second Law of Thermal Dynamics and that law refers to
something called entropy. Entropy's definition is - 'The tendency for
all matter and energy in the universe to evolve toward a state of inert
uniformity.' Or put simply - everything goes from order to disorder.
When you hear scientists and theologians debating how the world began.
You will hear theologians state that it would be impossible for a bunch
of molecules to get together out of randomness or disorder and create a
universe of order. The idea is that this would violate the second law of
thermal dynamics. Scientists on both sides of the issue have their ideas
and input in regards to this. However, I will leave this argument up for
those who are more educated on this to discuss such things.
On the other hand, we can extract success lessons from The Second Law of
Thermal Dynamic. Once again, the summary version of this law is that
everything goes from order to disorder. If we can drive the scientists
crazy for a moment and apply this to your life we can perhaps learn
something. I will suggest that in regards to success - success is NEVER
the result of disorder creating order. Or put another way, success is
never the result of disorder creating success.
You see, in nature random disorder cannot produce order. Success in
nature cannot be derived from disorder. Your life. your success. your
dreams. your goals. your passions. your happiness. your wishes. your
aspirations. will never be attained if your life is one of disorder. To
do so, would violate The Second Law of Thermal Dynamics.
If you desire to attain your goals, dreams and passions - the first step
must be to make your life a life of order. Successful people have
routines - these routines create habits. Habits and routines are the
beginning stages of order. Next, and this one makes me cringe - but
success if it comes from order that means you must be organized. If
organizational skills are not a skill that comes naturally to you as
they don't for me; do not rest until you can find someone to assist you
with organizing your success. If you don't, you will be doomed to a life
of unrealized dreams because disorder cannot evolve into order.
There is also a warning in The Second Law of Thermal Dynamics. That
warning is loud and clear to every ear willing to listen. The warning
says this: everything goes from order to disorder. This means that your
success will not be the product of disorder, however, it is very likely
that if you fall out of your routines that created your success, if you
stray from your habits of order and organization then your success will
eventually fall prey to disorder.
In conclusion, let the scientific law of thermal dynamics spur you on to
creating order in your life so that you may experience success and
remember the warning that order can dissolve into disorder if left
unchecked.

2. Quotes of
The Week
HABITS
"Habits are like comfortable beds; they are easy to get into, but
difficult to get out of." -- Denis Waitley
"Good habits are as addictive as bad habits, and a lot more rewarding."
-- Harvey Mackay
"Nothing needs reforming so much as other people's habits." -- Mark
Twain
"When you do the wrong thing, knowing it is wrong, you do so because you
haven't developed the habit of effectively controlling or neutralizing
strong inner urges that tempt you, or because you have established the
wrong habits and don't know how to eliminate them effectively." -- W.
Clement Stone
"Being miserable is a habit; being happy is a habit; and the choice is
yours." -- Tom Hopkins
"Neglect starts out as an infection then becomes a disease." -- Jim Rohn
"The core personal productivity habit is neatness. Important tasks are
not entrusted to messy people." -- Brian Tracy
"You leave old habits behind by starting out with the thought, 'I
release the need for this in my life'." -- Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
"To change a habit, make a conscious decision, then 'act out' the new
behavior." -- Dr. Maxwell Maltz
3. To Get Ahead, Use Your Head by Harvey Mackay
I'm the last person in the world who would tell you not to work hard.
I'm also the first one to remind you that working hard must also be
tempered by working smart, or you might just be wasting a load of
effort. There is a reason why we were born with both muscles and brains.
Consider the story of two lumberjacks in a tree-cutting contest. Both
were strong and determined, hoping to win the prize. But one was
hardworking and ambitious, chopping down every tree in his path at the
fastest pace possible, while the other appeared to be a little more laid
back, methodically felling trees and pacing himself. The go-getter
worked all day, skipping his lunch break, expecting that his superior
effort would be rewarded. His opponent, however, took an hour-long
lunch, then resumed his steady pace. In the end, the eager beaver was
dismayed to lose to his "lazier" competition. Thinking he deserved to
win after his hard work, he finally approached his opponent and said, "I
just don't understand. I worked longer and harder than you, and went
hungry to get ahead. You took a break, and yet you still won. It just
doesn't seem fair. Where did I go wrong?" The winner responded, "While I
was taking my lunch break, I was sharpening my ax."
Hard work will always pay off; smart work will pay better. Remember back
in college, there were the kids who studied all day and all night, but
still struggled to pass exams? Then there were the kids who studied hard
but also found time for a game of cards or basketball, and still aced
every test. Both groups studied the same material, attended the same
lectures taught by the same professors, and took the same test. Was the
second group just that much more brilliant? Maybe, but my money's on the
way they approached their material and learned how to study. If they
were smart, they applied those same principles after graduation: work
hard, but work smart.
That's a lesson that can be learned by even young children. A little
girl visiting a watermelon farm asked the farmer how much a large
watermelon cost. "Three dollars," he told her. "But I only have thirty
cents," the little girl said. The farmer looked around his field, and
feeling sorry for the little girl, pointed at a small watermelon and
said, "That one's thirty cents." "Oh good," she replied as she paid him,
"Just leave it on the vine and I'll be back in a month to get it."
Call it creativity, call it ingenuity, call it whatever: I call it using
your head. Knowing how to analyze a situation and how to execute an
action plan will put you ahead of the game in the long run. There's
nothing wrong with having a leg up on your competition - it's how you
win. The combination of hard work and smart work is the formula for
success. Think about what needs to be done, and then think again about
the best way to accomplish it - not necessarily the way you've always
done it, or the fastest way, and certainly not the hardest way. Never
make work harder than it has to be. That's just a colossal waste of
time.
Perhaps the ingenuity award goes to the fellow who came to the Canadian
border on his motorcycle, carrying two saddlebags strapped across his
seat. The border guards asked the obvious question, "What's in your
saddlebags?" "Rocks," was the reply. So the guards emptied the bags to
check out his story. Sure enough, all they found were rocks. So they
sent him on his way. The next week, the same fellow came to the
crossing, again on a motorcycle, again with the same payload. The guards
checked once again, and found more rocks. Off he went. The scene
repeated itself weekly for several months, until finally the guards
couldn't stand it any longer. "We know you are smuggling something
across the border, but every time we inspect your saddlebags we find
only rocks. Please tell us what you are up to, and we promise not to
turn you in." "Well," the fellow replied, "It's really very simple. I'm
smuggling stolen motorcycles."
Mackay's Moral: It's good to work hard. It's great to work smart. But
it's best to work hard and smart.
