Ron White's Ezine
March 21, 2007
Issue 39

Welcome!

I want you to get this image in your head...

In international waters an aircraft carrier is busy with movement. Flight deck crews are safely directing aircraft, the air traffic controller is giving commands, pilots are throttling their engines and sailors are swiftly and precisely preparing for a mission at 07:30. The mission is for a squadron of F-18 Hornets to take flight, but there is one problem: one of the cockpits is empty.

At 07:28 a young pilot, scarfing down a donut and chugging a cup of coffee, is smiling and laughing as he scampers towards his aircraft still zipping his suit. He grins and says, "Sorry guys, it was one of those Murphy's law mornings (or traffic was bad or something else). Sorry I am late."

Was that hard for you to picture? It was for me, because we all know that military pilots are some of the most trained and disciplined people on the planet. And in this scenario that lack of attention to detail would affect an entire mission and very possibly cost lives.

In life and business an often overlooked component to success is attention to detail and precision. If you want to be the best of the best, if you want to be the 'Top Gun' of your organization - the only way to achieve that mark is to fail to make excuses, and, more importantly fail to put yourself in a position where you have to make excuses. A true 'Top Gun' will pay attention to the smallest detail and this means:

1. Realizing when you fail to meet expectations, you impact your entire team and customers. There is a difference between risking and failing and failing because you were sloppy.

2. Becoming an expert at preparation. In the military this is called the pre-flight briefing. You better have a pre-flight briefing before every sales call, business day or meeting to organize your thoughts and actions.

3. Every mission has an objective. Never make a sales call or business contact without a clearly stated and defined objective. A military pilot would never take off just to see what will happen. Have an objective.

This is how you become a 'Top Gun'!

1. You Need More Weight by Ron White

How do you build muscle?

If you answered, "Exercise" then you are partially right. For the most part exercise is not what builds muscle. Exercise maintains the muscle you have already built, yet it only actually builds muscle when that exercise goes into uncharted territory.

"You need more weight."

That is one of my best friend's favorite things to say when we work out. If I am throwing up 225 pounds on the bench press and there is no struggle, he is the first to either add more weight or demand reps. I used to say, "No man, I want to control this weight first. I want to do 8 solid reps of 225 before I move on to something else." His reply would be, "Are you here to build muscle or maintain what you have?"

My particular goal at the time was to build muscle, so I would (knowing he was right) reluctantly say, "Build muscle." His matter of fact retort was, "Okay, then you need more weight or more reps – maybe both."

You see, when lifting weights your muscle is built when it goes beyond its comfort zone or literally stretches beyond what you have done before. If I had lifted six reps and I was spent – I also knew that there was no way my set was over. Just as I am about to give up, I hear the voice spotting me blurt out, "One more… come on… it is all you… one more… you got it… push it up." My friend, Brian, will consistently push me to do one more than I would if he wasn't there, and that is why when I work out with Brian my muscles are consistently in the growth zone.

If you are doing a set of 10 reps and are spent – you will get 90% of your growth if you do an 11th or 12th rep. The first 10 are maintaining what you have. The final two are the growth reps - these are the reps where you stretch yourself.

I have found that success in life is very similar to building muscle in the gym. If you are doing what you are comfortable with or can do easily you never will grow. You will never expand to reach your full potential. Growth only occurs in life when you are pushing yourself to something new. This could mean learning a foreign language, learning to play an instrument, conquering your fears or pursuing your life long dream of building a business, writing a play, authoring a book or talking to people that you normally would shy away from.

Growth in life is going to come when you are pushing yourself to lift the weights of life that you can only lift with a spotter. This means that you should not be afraid to team up with others and rely on them in your effort to grow. If you are going to build muscle in the gym you are going to need to do two things: #1 Lift more weight; #2 Have a Spotter. The answers for success in life are very similar. Sometimes a spotter in life could be a personal life coach. There is absolutely no doubt that they will push you to lift more weight and be there to spot you when you feel that you can't get the weight off your chest.

Go for more weight this week and get yourself a spotter!
Ron White

3. Zig Ziglar On "Overnight" Successes

Many years ago Gary Spies from White Lake, Minnesota, did an incredible thing. He sailed his ten-foot boat across the Atlantic Ocean in just fifty-four days. Most of us can only imagine what he endured to complete his ordeal, but suddenly the whole world knew who he was.

What is the real story? Did he just have a good idea, implement it, and "luck" into celebrity status? Gary worked, planned, sacrificed, and studied for three years to build his boat. He committed not only his money but also 100 percent of his spare time for three solid years. He had to chart his course and plan every detail, including maximum use of his space and the proper food, clothing, and water to carry.

Once the trip began, so did the danger. The most dangerous and difficult part was fighting the violent areas of the Atlantic Ocean. The seas often combined with a driving, bitterly cold rain, which chilled him to the bone. By the time he reached England... his entire body was black and blue... it's safe to say that he sacrificed and worked in order to receive his rewards.

Most of us are not interested in doing anything of that nature, but it's safe to say that if we're going to accomplish anything of significance... long hours of planning and even more hours of had work are required. It's also safe to say it's worth it because the effort is temporary, but the satisfaction and rewards can be long-lasting.

See you at the Top!

 4. Zig's Strategies for Success!

"You were born to win, but to be a winner you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win." – Zig Ziglar

What if you could be in a room with the great Zig Ziglar as he shares on 5 key components to success in life and business (including building a healthy self-esteem, developing & maintaining the right attitude, building winning relationships and how to set and achieve goals)?

And not only would you get to review the ideas and strategies Zig shares, on 6 full DVDs over the future weeks, months and years with your family and staff (and for yourself), but you also could listen to the CD version in your car and when you go for a walk or jog.

And lastly you would be able to translate all this into a strategic working personal and professional life plan using Zig's Performance Planner.

------If you watch these 6 DVDs, I can assure you that you will soon after make an appointment with your family to go through this entire program together! Just think -- what if (for so many of us) our parents had made sure that we had an opportunity to hear a Zig Ziglar or Jim Rohn while we were growing up and we had set our goals, life goals, financial goals, career goals… while we were still in school - wow!--------
