Ron White's Ezine
July 12, 2007
Issue 47

Welcome!

Synergy -- It has become a buzz word in business made popular by speakers and authors. It is a word that came to my mind yesterday when a person who is on a 'team' of mine stole from me. It wasn't a big theft - he stole a 40 cent orange. I had left it on a table and when I returned it was gone. I instinctively knew who took it so I searched him out and found him in another part of the building chomping on an orange. He denied, denied and denied but it was obvious what he had done. I didn't lash out at him - instead I thanked him for revealing his character to me in a way that only cost me 40 cents! Now I will be more careful with my wallet, and it cost me less than a dollar to learn this lesson from this man.

Later as I sat in my chair that day, reflecting, I was disappointed. Not because of the orange but because of what just happened to our team. If I allow it, this could disrupt the synergy of the entire team. Synergy occurs when a team is moving in unison. On a football field it is when a team is in complete sync and the quarterback knows exactly where all the receivers are without looking and where they will be in 2 seconds. Synergy occurs because the team has practiced over and over together, and that reputation builds trust in one another's actions. It is a beautiful thing to watch a team in the midst of synergy. Synergy is when all the components come together and 1 + 1 = 3 because of the momentum.

Success in your organization can multiply geometrically if there is synergy. The keys to maintaining synergy are: 1) selfless acts of the team members who see the team as greater than the individual, 2) practiced repetition of the desired outcome and 3) trust that comes from the previous two principles.

Synergy can be destroyed by an orange if you let it or harnessed for your success if you desire.

1. Hated For Who You Are by Ron White

'It is better to be hated for who you are than loved for whom you are not.' Although this is true, too many people are like a kite in the wind - going in whatever direction the gust will take them. I lived in Seattle in 1999 and the World Trade Organization was holding a convention there. The streets quickly became a mob environment with protestors hurling rocks through shopping center windows and overturning everything that wasn't bolted down - and a few things that were.

A brave reporter muscled his way in the midst of the protestors and asked someone in the group what they were protesting. His reply was, 'The WTO!' The reporter persisted and inquired, 'Yes, but what about the WTO are you protesting?' The protestor who had just smashed windows all down First Avenue replied, 'I don't know - we are just protesting the WTO!!!'

It shouldn't have been surprising to the reporter or to me, although it was a little shocking that this protester had no clue why he was vandalizing the city. I am sure that many of the protestors were educated on what they were protesting, yet, it seemed that at least some - were simply happy to be going along with the crowd rendering havoc and venting their frustration with life in general.

Are you just following the crowd and have no idea why? Or have you ever asked yourself - what do you believe about life, the after life, society, your role in society, your goals and your dreams? Or have you accepted someone else's direction for your life and effortlessly followed that direction as a zombie without a mind of your own.

President Harry Truman noted as he sat outside the White House one evening that the mockingbird has no voice of its own. Instead, it mimics or mocks the noises of other birds. Do you have a voice of your own or are you mimicking the voices of those around you?

Finally, if you are alone, discouraged and beaten down because you are standing with an unpopular belief that you believe is right - do not give in. Stand alone if that is the only option and be hated for who you are, if necessary. It is much better than the alternative.

ACTION POINTS:

-- Ask yourself what do YOU believe about society, life, the after life and your direction?

-- If you aren't sure, avoid the reflex action of spouting what those around you have told you. Take some time and research what you find to be true.

-- Realize that you will not be hated for being an individual. You can tactfully disagree with others and, if you are diplomatic and mature, you will actually be respected for being your own person.

-- Understand that massive success in life, normally, is not achieved by marching to the rank and file. It is achieved by the select few who in the words of Robert Frost, '…took the path less traveled.'

-- Promise yourself that you will not model the life of a kite or mocking bird. Make the effort to become an individual and watch your happiness soar as an eagle.

-- Ron White

CHARACTER

"As a man thinks in his heart, so is he." -- Proverbs 23:7, Bible

"Character may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones." -- Phillips Brooks

"Character is a quality that embodies many important traits, such as integrity, courage, perseverance, confidence and wisdom. Unlike your fingerprints that you are born with and can´t change, character is something that you create within yourself and must take responsibility for changing" -- Jim Rohn

"I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." -- Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Adversity is a severe instructor, set over us by one who knows us better than we do ourselves, as he loves us better too. He that wrestles with us strengthens our nerves and sharpens our skill. Our antagonist is our helper. This conflict with difficulty makes us acquainted with our object, and compels us to consider it in all its relations. It will not suffer us to be superficial." -- Edmund Burke

"My preferred person today is one who is always aware of the needs of others, or their pain and fear and unhappiness, and their search for self-respect. I once liked clever people. Now I like good People." -- Soloman Freehof

"The highest reward for a man's toil is not what he gets for it but what he becomes by it." -- John Ruskin

"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved." -- Helen Keller

"Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain - and most fools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving." -- Dale Carnegie

"I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death." -- Thomas Paine

"Be absolutely clear about who you are and what you stand for. Refuse to compromise." -- Brian Tracy

"Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character." -- Albert Einstein

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." -- Abraham Lincoln

"I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do! That is character!" -- Theodore Roosevelt

"If it is not right do not do it; if it is not true do not say it." -- Marcus Aurelius

"The best index to a person's character is (a) how he treats people who can't do him any good, and (b) how he treats people who can't fight back." -- Abigail Van Buren

"Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny." -- Frank Outlaw

3. 7 Keys for Joyful Living! by Chris Widener

Here are some thoughts for finding and experiencing joy in your life. If there were one thing I could wish upon my family, friends and the readers of this Ezine, it would be joy in everything they do!

Know your purpose. Nothing will bring you joy more than knowing what it is that you are about on this earth. Not knowing brings sadness, wondering, fear and lack of fulfillment. Above all, find out what your unique purpose is here on this earth - then fulfill it! As you do, you will experience joy!

Live purposefully. This is a follow up to number one. It is one thing to know your purpose, but then you need to live according to that purpose. This is a matter of priorities. Let your actions and schedule reflect your purpose. Don't react to circumstances and let them cause you to live without your purpose fully in site. Living without your purpose will cause frustration. Living purposefully will bring you deep satisfaction and joy!

Stretch yourself. Don't settle into the status quo. That will leave you unfulfilled. Always look to stretch yourself. Whatever you are doing, stretch yourself to do more! Stretching yourself will break the limits you have set for yourself and will cause you to find joy in your expanded horizons!

Give more than you take. It brings happiness to accumulate. It brings joy to give away. Sure, getting the car you worked hard for will bring you a sense of satisfaction and even happiness. But it won't bring you joy. Giving something away to the less fortunate will bring you deep, abiding joy.

Surprise yourself and others too. The words here are spontaneity and surprise! Every once in a while, do the unexpected. It will cause everybody to sit back and say, "Wow, where did that come from?" It will put a little joy in your life, and theirs.

Indulge yourself sometimes. Too much indulgence and you are caught in the happiness trap -- looking for the next purchase, celebration, etc., to bring you a little "happiness high." But if you will allow yourself an infrequent indulgence as a reward for a job well done and a life well lived, you will appreciate the indulgence and experience the joy of it.

Laugh a little - no, a lot! Most people are just too serious. We need to laugh a little - no, a lot! Learn to laugh daily, even if you have to learn to laugh in bad situations. This life is to be enjoyed! The next time you go to the movie rental store, get a comedy and let loose! Let yourself laugh!

Joy can be yours! Look for it, pursue it and enjoy it!

4. Is it possible for you to get anything you want out of life?

Anything? But there's just one problem. Usually...

Someone else has it, and you have to convince them to give it to you!

Here are some examples of what I'm talking about:

- If you want to go to college... you have to convince the college admissions officer to let you in by showing that you're a good student.

- If you want to get a date or someone to love you... you have to convince that girl (or guy) of your dreams that you can be trusted, and you're worthy of their love and attention.

- If you want a raise or a better job... you have to convince your employer to give you one.

- If you want to run a business and create wealth... you need to find customers who are willing to buy your products and services.

And if you want the deeper and more meaningful things in life... like the trust, respect, praise and admiration of the people around you... loyal friends... security... prestige... popularity... children who adore you... overall success... you know, things you can't buy with money... the fact remains...
