Ron White's Ezine
September 19, 2007
Issue 51

Welcome!

The Milwaukee Brewers...

If you have been reading my Ezine for a while you will know that is the team that I picked before the season started as my 'upset pick' to win the World Series. Despite my relative success in picking teams the past few years, I was soundly mocked by my friends--and a few of you :) when in my May 1, 2007 (Issue 42) I picked the Brewers. It has been 25 YEARS SINCE THE BREWERS MADE THE PLAYOFFS! That was a bold pick to announce to 65,000 people. Well... as we stand right now the Brewers are tied for first place in their division with the Cubs and we have about 10 games to go. I feel almost un-American rooting against the Cubs but I am!

The lesson is this, we all have an equal shot at victory. We all have a chance for the big prize. It isn't just the teams with the biggest payrolls and big names that win it all. It is the teams that play good fundamental ball regardless of the payroll or super-stars.

You may not have a big name or big 'payroll' but I truly believe that if you stick to the fundamentals and work hard you can out hustle, out play and beat the 'big guys'. Do I think the Brewers have a better chance than most to win it all this year? Nope... I think that would be the Red Sox. But I thought they had a better chance than most gave them credit for in April and I think many are a little surprised right now.

On a side note, last year my upset pick was the Tigers - again, a bold pick back in April of 2006 -they were just a few years removed from one of the worst records in baseball history. If I would have made that pick this year would it have been bold? Nope. Why? Because they proved last year they could do it when no one thought they could. That is the final lesson. Your history may not be one of success, but you can turn it all around with a good 'season' and before you know it you will go from long shot to favorite!

So in the next few weeks monitor the scores with me if you want. I am checking everyday and when I do I remind myself of the lesson. Anyone can win if they just play good ball - regardless of pocketbooks, names or history. I don't care what your personal history is, I don't care what your pocketbook is or if you have a big name in your industry. You can turn it all around if you chose to do so.

Remember keep your eye on the ball, touch all the bases and just make contact and I will see you in the playoffs of life!

1. I Know That You Are Lying by Ron White

Ten years ago, someone attempted to drive a wedge between myself and a female friend. He confronted her and told her that I had said some negative things about her. She looked at him and while smiling said, 'I know you are lying.' He was shocked and inquired as to why she would say that. She said, 'I have never heard Ronnie speak negatively about anyone and because of that I know that he wouldn't do it about me either.'

Do you know what? She was right, I had said nothing negative about her.

Five years ago, I was in business with my cousin. An associate of ours wanted to get me out of the picture so he buddied up to my cousin and said, 'Your cousin has been saying some bad stuff about you.' My cousin didn't even look up from his work, but the first words out of his mouth were, 'You obviously don't know Ronnie or you would have never said that. He doesn't talk like that.'

Two scenarios, separated by five years, yet two people who knew me better than most confidently told my accusers that they had never heard me speak negatively about anyone and because of that knew they were lying.

Here is the life lesson:

In your office, organization or circle of friends if you want to see a cancer spread faster than almost anything... begin to speak negatively about others when they are not around. Not only will a cancer spread in your group that will fragment it into factions, but you will no longer be trustworthy. It made me feel good that my friends didn't say, 'I know you are lying because he is my friend or loyal to me.' I am glad they didn't say that because friendships change. Instead, they spoke to my character in my defense.

Do I always get it right in this area? Certainly not. Last year, a man had irritated me so bad that I often fantasized about planting my knuckles in the back of his skull via his nostrils. I was so irritated I began spewing my venom to a few who would listen. Finally, I realized the damage I was doing to my reputation and I confronted him.

Do you want to be a top notch sales professional? Attempt that without being trusted and try to be trusted while being known as a gossip.

Do you desire to be an effective leader? Again, attempt that without being trusted. A simple way to lose trust is gossip.

Develop a reputation as someone who can be trusted not because of your loyalty to your friends, but because of your character and watch as your business skyrockets!

2. Quotes of The Week
INTEGRITY/HONESTY

"I hope I shall always possess firmness and virtue enough to maintain what I consider the most enviable of all titles, the character of an honest man." -- George Washington

"The proof of integrity is what you do when no one is looking." -- Denis Waitley

"Live in truth with all people under all circumstances." -- Brian Tracy

"Integrity is not a conditional word. It doesn't blow in the wind or change with the weather. It is your inner image of yourself, and if you look in there and see a man who won't cheat, then you know he never will." -- John D. MacDonald

"Each time you are honest and conduct yourself with honesty, a success force will drive you toward greater success. Each time you lie, even with a little white lie, there are strong forces pushing you toward failure." -- Joseph Sugarman

"The virtue of man ought to be measured, not by his extraordinary exertions, but by his everyday conduct." -- Blaise Pascal

"The 'Inside-Out' approach to personal and self; even more fundamentally, to start with the most inside part of self - with your paradigms, your character, and your motives. The inside-out approach says that private victories precede public victories, that making and keeping promises to ourselves precedes making and keeping promises to others. It says it is futile to put personality ahead of character, to try to improve relationships with others before improving ourselves." -- Stephen Covey

"The most important persuasion tool you have in your entire arsenal is integrity." -- Zig Ziglar

"Whenever you do a thing, act as if all the world were watching." -- Thomas Jefferson

"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Always do right! This will gratify some people and astonish the rest. -- Mark Twain

"When men speak ill of thee, live so as nobody may believe them." -- Plato

"If you want to take the meaning of the word integrity and reduce it to its simplest terms, you'd conclude that a man of integrity is a promise keeper. When he gives you his word. You can take it to the bank. His word is good." -- Bill McCartney

"Integrity is the first step to true greatness. Men love to praise it, but are slow to practice it. To maintain it in high places costs self-denial; in all places it is liable to opposition, but its end is glorious, and the universe will yet do it homage." -- Charles Simmons

"Integrity pays, but not in cash." -- Jennifer Stone

"Be as you wish to seem." -- Socrates

"Honesty in the workplace can't be regulated. It has to be encouraged by leaders who themselves are honest and willing to admit their failures." -- Carol Hymowitz

"One stumble is enough to deface the character of an honorable life." -- L. Estrange

"I have found that being honest is the best technique I can use. Right up front, tell people what you're trying to accomplish and what you're willing to sacrifice to accomplish it." -- Lee Iacocca

"I am a big believer in the 'mirror test.' All that matters is if you can look in the mirror and honestly tell the person you see there, that you've done your best." -- John McKay

3. Zig Ziglar On Straight Talk

A few days after my second daughter was born, I had to take a trip over to South Carolina from our home (at the time) in Knoxville, Tennessee. On the way back, a snow storm left me and a few hundred other motorists stranded for the night. Fortunately, I was stranded directly behind a nice, warm Greyhound bus. The driver was kind enough to permit me to climb aboard and spend the night.

The next morning the highways were cleared and I drove on home. I had no sooner pulled into the driveway and gotten inside my house than my wife said we needed more baby supplies. I slipped my heavy coat back on and was headed for the door when my soon-to-be four-year-old daughter, Suzan, said, "Daddy, take me with you." I explained to her that the weather was bad, I would only be gone a few minutes, and it would be best for her to stay home. As only a four-year-old can, she said, "But, Daddy, I will be so lonely." I said, "Now, Doll, your mother is here and so is your new baby sister, and Lizzie (who was our live-in nanny) is here." Then she looked at me and said, "But, Daddy, I'll be lonely for you." I don't need to tell you that she went with me to the store that day.

In retrospect, that is persuasion at its absolute best--straight from the heart, without guile and without any subterfuge. In a direct, simple way she had made me feel important--I was the one she was going to be lonely for. I believe that if we will play it straight, speak from the heart, and be open and direct with people in a loving way, we will improve our communication skills dramatically and our persuasiveness will go up. Think about it. Speak from the heart, and I'll SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
