Welcome!
The Milwaukee Brewers.....
No, that isn't the answer to the question, 'Who is the least known
professional sports team?' That is the answer to the question, 'Who is
my upset pick to win the World Series?' You may say, 'Upset pick! That
is a borderline delusional pick!' Yeah...you are right. But that is what
makes it FUN!
Every March (before the season starts) I make my baseball picks. It all
started back in June 2001 when I picked the Diamond Backs to win it all.
They did and that started my annual ritual of predicting a winner, each
year at the end of March before the season actually begins. I wasn't
right again until 2004 when I selected the Red Sox as unbeatable in the
playoffs and they were. At this point I was 2-4 in World Series picks --
a pretty good average. Then in 2006 I went out on a limb and picked the
Detroit Tigers when just a few years before they had lost 119 games!
(That is one loss short of a record, by the way) But last October when
they made it to the World Series my friends started referring to me as 'Karnac'.
Now this year, I have selected the Milwaukee Brewers. Yes, I realize it
sounds crazy and delusional (and it may be) but so did The Detroit
Tigers.
Before I lose you non baseball fans I do have a point -- I never pick a
"favorite" at the start of the year. Why?
1. It isn't as much fun or drama
2. It is fun to root for an underdog
3. I believe we all have it in us to be winners
Well, how does this tie into real life? I believe that you have it in
YOU to be a winner. In your career or world you may get as much respect
as The Milwaukee Brewers, but you know what? I believe you have a chance
to win it all if you stick to the basics, play hard and give it your all
-- every day. At the start of every year each team has a fair chance.
Sure some teams have more talent and those are the breaks, but a team
that works together can beat a lot of talent. In your career or life --
as you chase your goals -- there may be those who have more funding,
more talent and get more of the spotlight.
But I believe every year we all have a chance, and I believe you do as
well.
There are at least 10 teams that have more talent, ability and a better
shot than the Brewers to win it all. But if they work hard and play
together they can pass those other teams. It doesn't mean that they
will, but they could -- they have the potential. So I am rooting for you
to work hard, pull together and win your own personal world series this
year regardless of your history, funding or talent.

1. If You Had A Million Dollars by Ron White
A few years ago, I saw a movie that had a very funny scene. One of the
characters asked the other what he would do if he had a million dollars.
He replied, 'Nothing....if I had a million dollars I would just relax
all day long and enjoy myself.' Another guy chimed in and seriously
stated, 'Hey, you don't need a million dollars to do that...just look at
my cousin...he is flat broke and he doesn't do a thing but sit there all
day long.'
I think I laughed about that for an hour, and it just caused me to smile
again.
Although the line in the movie was a joke, it illustrates a truth of
life. Whatever it is that you wish to do - do it! Why wait? Seriously,
why put off your dreams until tomorrow or until you get all your ducks
in a row. Guess what? The ducks of life sometimes have a mind of their
own and tend to wander a lot. You may never get all your ducks in a row.
I have been a professional speaker since I was twenty years old. When I
was twenty seven I was speaking with a woman and she said,' I am fifty
nine years old and by the time I am sixty five I would like to have my
masters degree and speaking as a professional speaker.' I looked at her
perplexed as I inquired,' Why in the world are you going to wait until
you are sixty five and have a degree? I am twenty seven years old with
no degree and I am speaking tomorrow!' You could tell that my statement
shattered her reality and she had no response.
This woman was waiting to pursue her dream until everything was just
perfect. Until she had everything that she thought she needed to insure
maximum success when in reality the greatest thing that she could have
done is simply move in the direction of what she desires.
The greatest resistor of human dreams is the ' If I had a million
dollars attitude.' Individuals dream that if I had a million dollars I
could pursue my vision. No you wouldn't! If you don't pursue your vision
when you are broke – when you grasp a million you will create another
reason why it isn't possible. Or if you are one of the few who would
actually live their dreams if you had a million dollars, what is the
probability that you are going to save a million dollars?
Ever heard this train of thought?
Once I get out of high school I am going to see the world in travel...
Once I finish college I am going to see the world and travel...
Once I get married I am going to travel with my spouse…
After our kids are older we are going to see the world and travel...
When our kids get out of high school we are going to see the world and
travel...
As soon as we retire we are going to see the world and travel...
Now, I am out of school, kids are gone and I am retired – if I was
younger and my health was better I would see the world and travel…
Don't wait...
Many questions of life are complicated and unclear. Yet, the question of
if you should pursue your dream or what until you have a million dollars
is as clear as the waters of Fiji. You are not promised tomorrow, you
are not promised a million dollars...pursue your dream today and inch
closer or it will remain equally as distant as the pages of your life
near the final chapter.

The Week
PROCRASTINATION
"You may delay, but time will not." -- Benjamin Franklin
"Most people spend their entire lives on a fantasy island called
'Someday I'll.'" -- Denis Waitley
"Some people procrastinate so much that all they can do is run around
like firefighters all day -- putting out fires that should not have
gotten started in the first place." -- Nido Qubein
"It seems to me that it's actually harder to invent excuses than it is
to get the sale." -- Jeffrey Gitomer
"Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday." -- Don
Marquis
"Some men have thousands of reasons why they cannot do what they want
to, when all they need is one reason why they can." -- Mary Frances
Berry
"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before
starting to improve the world." -- Anne Frank
"Anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn't the work he is
supposed to be doing at that moment." -- Robert Benchley
"Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted
task." -- William James
"Who dares nothing, need hope for nothing." -- Friedrich von Schiller
"A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that
no one could find fault." -- Cardinal Newman
"The greatest thief this world ever produced is procrastination, and he
is still at large." -- Henry Wheeler Shaw
3. Persist Until by Vic Johnson (excerpted from Day by Day with James Allen)
"Great is the heartfelt joy when, after innumerable and apparently
unsuccessful attempts, some ingrained fault of character is at least
cast out to trouble its erstwhile victim and the world no more." - The
Mastery of Destiny
James Allen is sharing with us the rewarding (heartfelt joy) for finally
overcoming a personal character deficit. However, what he's really
sharing with us is the value of persistence.
If I had to pick one character trait that I think is a "must have" in
order to be successful in any endeavor, it would be persistence. In
fact, it seems to be the one trait that is the dominant trait in every
single, super-successful individual I know. I believe it to be the one
trait that any ordinary person can use to become extraordinary
("extra-ordinary").
Napoleon Hill, who wrote "Think and Grow Rich", devoted an entire
chapter to Persistence and said that the only thing that was different
about Henry Ford and Thomas Edison was their persistence.
I've long since forgotten where I read it, but I've never forgotten the
story of the tribe in Africa that confounded all of the anthropologists.
It seems that this tribe had for centuries enjoyed a 100% success rate
with its rain dance. In comparing this tribe to other tribes who did
rain dances but who didn't always experience success, the experts
couldn't find anything that differentiated the one tribe. They performed
the same rituals, praying the same incantations to the same gods, in the
same costumes. Like all the tribes, they sometimes danced for days, even
weeks on end. Finally an astute observer noticed something very telling.
The successful tribe did one thing - and only one thing - different than
the other tribes. It 'Always' danced 'Until' it rained!
If your head is hanging low today as mine has done on many a day, I hope
you'll find the encouragement to know that you really only need to do
one thing a this point --- "Persist'. And that means taking just one
step in the right direction --- even a half step in the right direction.
Yes, maybe you need to review your plan or change your plan or maybe you
even need to create a plan in the first place :-) But the one way you
can ensure that you will meet with success (it's absolutely guaranteed)
-- is to "dance until it rains!"
And that's worth thinking about.
