Welcome!

Hello from Sydney Australia where I am speaking this week!

I travel a lot as a speaker and I really like to travel light. As a matter of fact, I am willing to bet that I packed less for this trip to Australia than most of you do for a weekend trip in your same time zone. It is great for moving around easily but can lead to shopping on the road. On a recent trip to Phoenix I realized I didn't have any shorts or casual shirts and made a trip to the hotel store. Since I have never been mistaken for a GQ model I am always open to suggestions on clothing. While looking at clothes I asked the clerk if she thought the shorts I was looking at went with the shirt and what shoes I should get. Just then a female shopper said, 'No that does not go together....try those shorts...yeah those.....yep that looks good. Those shoes over there would look good with that.'

WOW! She really knew her stuff...I then looked at the sales person and she agreed with the woman and so I went and put on the new clothes. I walked out of the changing room and I asked the sales person what she thought. The sales person then said, 'Looks good to me but why don't you ask your wife.'

'MY WIFE! I don't have a wife!' I said in shock laughing out loud. She said, 'Oh I thought that woman was your wife. She seemed so comfortable with you and so sure of herself when suggesting clothes.'

It was a great sales lesson. In sales - offer suggestions - 'Why don't you try this one? Oh you look good in that car....I have just the home to show you.' Offer up suggestions and when you do make sure that you are comfortable and relaxed. I bought the clothes that day because I had no idea what looked good, and this woman sounded so incredibly confident.

1. Offer suggestions
2. Be confident
3. Be relaxed

I then looked around for 'my wife' and she wasn't there. It was kind of like the Lone Ranger saving the day and then riding off into the sunset as the people look around to thank him. She was gone....maybe not off into the sunset or on a horse, but gone and it was only then at the cash register did I realize how expensive 'my wife's' tastes were!

1. Einstein's Formula for Success by Ron White (excerpted from Ron White's How to Develop the Mind of Einstein CD program)

Albert Einstein had a formula for success. Can you believe that? One of the greatest minds of all time developed a math formula for success! I suggest you read this carefully -- this may be the most important math equation that you will ever see.

Einstein said, 'If A equals success, then the formula is: A=X+Y+Z.
X is work.
Y is play.
Z is keep your mouth shut."

Einstein no doubt had an excellent sense of humor. Let's look at the 3 variables in this equation. They are:
1. Work
2. Play
3. Keeping your mouth shut!

1. Work: Albert Einstein had a tremendous work ethic and because of that gave more to society and modern science than any person in recent times

2. Play: Einstein, however, did not work 24 hours a day and made time for fun and relaxation. His idea of fun may have been different than yours, but that doesn't mean it still wasn't play.

3. Keeping your mouth shut: Finally, my favorite part of his success formal is to keep your mouth shut. I genuinely believe that the person who talks the least says the most. A friend of mine complains that the woman he is dating talks too much. I don't know how to break the news to him; however, the problem is not that she talks too much. It simply is the fact that he is irritated that he isn't able to talk. Now, let me just say this is not a generic man and woman statement. I am speaking about a specific person that I know. His desire is to constantly talk and because he likes to talk so much, he will talk in circles. If you let him talk long enough he will repeat the same thing three times and then contradict himself. His desire is not to hear but to be heard.

Albert Einstein, on the other hand had nothing to prove. He felt no need to be the "Chatty Cathy" he could have been with his knowledge. It wasn't important to him to talk to everyone he met and talk over their heads to demonstrate his IQ. Instead, he learned the value of quietness and solitude.

Shift your mind set from being a talker to a listener. It has been said that you can make more friends in 5 minutes by becoming interested in others than you can make in 5 years of trying to get others interested in you! How do you become interested in others? You ask questions and then keep your mouth shut!

Dale Carnegie wrote a best selling book entitled 'How to Win Friends and Influence People.' One of the key premises of this book was that everyone's favorite subject is actually themselves and that the sweetest sound to their ears is the sound of their own name. Einstein knew this and realized he could influence others by choosing his spots to speak and validating others by extending them the courtesy of listening.

2. Quotes of The Week

CREATIVITY

"The most important thing I learned from big companies is that creativity gets stifled when everyone's got to follow the rules." -- David Kelley

"Creativity is so delicate a flower that praise tends to make it bloom, while discouragement often nips it in the bud. Any of us will put out more and better ideas if our efforts are appreciated." -- Alexander Osburn

"Creativity is inventing, experimenting, growing, taking risks, breaking rules, making mistakes and having fun." -- Mary Lou Cook

"Creativity can solve almost any problem. The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything." -- George Lois

"Creativity arises out of the tension between spontaneity and limitations, the latter (like the river banks) forcing the spontaneity into the various forms which are essential to the work of art or poem." -- Rollo May

"Artistic creativity is a whirlpool of imagination that swirls in the depths of the mind." -- Robert Toth

"If we fail to nourish our souls, they wither, and without soul, life ceases to have meaning. The creative process shrivels in the absence of continual dialogue with the soul. And creativity is what makes life worth living." -- Marion Woodman

"In order to have a real relationship with our creativity, we must take the time and care to cultivate it." -- Julia Cameron

"Creativity is our true nature; blocks are an unnatural thwarting of a process at once as normal and as miraculous as the blossoming of a flower at the end of a slender green stem." -- Julia Cameron

"While we have the gift of life, it seems to me the only tragedy is to allow part of us to die whether it is our spirit, our creativity or our glorious uniqueness." -- Gilda Radner

3. How Not To and How To Think Creatively by Harvey Mackay

They say you can't teach creativity.

Maybe so, but it sure can be killed.

"It won't work."

"They tried something like that before, and it didn't work."

"The guy who thought of that before you did got canned."

"The boss won't like that."

"It's too late to try that."

"It's too early to try that."

"Let someone else try that first."

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

"It isn't in the budget."

"It isn't company policy."

"It isn't in the standard contract."

"That's not my job."

"We don't do that here." (Often called the "not invented here" syndrome.)

My favorite: "Not a bad idea at all! Let's run it by legal."

You won't hear much of that at Fallon McElligott, the advertising outfit that has been named Agency of the Year by Ad Age more than once.

Creativity is the mother's milk of advertising. Here's what Bill Westbrook, president and creative director of Fallon McElligott, has to say about some of the ways they generate creativity at their shop.

"We're in the communications business. We wouldn't be very good at it if we didn't know how to communicate with each other. We take a number of steps to accomplish that:

1. "We always schedule meetings away from where people generally work. Why? So they're forced to see what's hanging on the walls outside their own area. That encourages feedback, comments, compliments, mixing with one another.

2. "We hold quarterly meetings with the entire staff to show everyone the new work that is being done, including work in progress. At these meetings, we often have one department make a full-blown presentation on what they're doing. We want everyone to have a handle on what's going on throughout the shop.

3. "Sometimes writers and art directors work in concert with designers so they have a design perspective as well as an advertising perspective. It's very unusual in our business to do this.

4. "If you work for an advertising agency, how can you know what they're selling unless you've seen your agency try and sell it? 99.9 percent of our people had never seen a full scale presentation of an advertising pitch to a client. After we landed the McDonald's account, we gave all of our people exactly the same presentation we gave to McDonald's -- just as though they were the voters/decision makers of the company." (Westbrook didn't tell me whether the agency's employees voted to give themselves the account.)

5. "We gave a lot of thought to what our common areas would be like. We made a full scale replica of a 'diner,' so that everyone would want to come to eat lunch there and goof off, take their coffee breaks, rub elbows. Too many company common areas feel like the design had been inspired by that scene in White Heat where Jimmy Cagney goes bezerko in the prison mess hall."

Fallon has succeeded in creating an atmosphere where creativity can flourish.

-- Harvey Mackay
