Ron White's Ezine

Issue 75

Welcome!

Who hasn't been talking about the USA's best Olympian - swimmer Michael Phelps!? I am sure it is news to no one that he won 8 gold medals in the current Olympics and has 14 total. That is more than any Olympian EVER! AMAZING! I then started reading about him to find out what goes into the mind of an Olympian to see if I could get some knowledge to apply to my own life and success. I read that he consumes 12,000 calories a day....I thought, 'Well, I am not currently doing that but if that is the difference maker I will do it! I see a few cheese burgers in my future! I am going to eat my way to success!'

After a moment of glee discovering this success piece missing from my daily routine I found other pieces in Michael's life that probably have a more practical application to my life and yours.

First of all, he swims 5-6 hours a DAY! 50 miles per week! - Are you getting better? If not, how much time do you spend in training? Commit yourself to your goals whether it is winning a gold medal or hitting your sales numbers and then train, train and train some more!

Secondly, he finishes strong! In his 7th race his opponent Serbia's Milorad Cavic glided to the wall at the end and Phelps gave one last mini-stroke. He won by one one hundredth of a second! His opponent was gliding and Phelps was finishing! Do you glide too often or do you work until the end of the day? week? month? year? end of the project?

Next, he had written down the number of gold medals he was shooting for on a sheet of paper before the Olympics started and only made this known to his coach. After his 8th win, he acknowledge his goal was eight gold medals. Are you goals written down? Write them down!

Finally, he knew his numbers! After his swims in practice, his coach would show him his times and they worked to get better. What are your numbers? Do you know how many calls to get an appointment? Your closing ratio? Your average sale in terms of dollars? So many sales professionals don't track their numbers. You must to win the gold!

So I found some more practical applications than eating 12,000 calories a day and since I am not swimming 6 hours a day it is probably not the best idea. On the other hand, I think I am going to grab some cheese cake 'just in case' .....

1. What Am I Doing Wrong?

A few years ago I called a special meeting. I went to my staff and I told them that the next day at 1:00 we were going to have a special meeting. The topic of the meeting was going to be all the areas that I as their boss could improve upon. One of my employees stood up and said, 'Okay...right now?'

I replied, 'No, we will do this tomorrow at one o'clock'. She said very matter of factly, 'Oh... I am ready now.' I smiled and told her that I wanted her to at least PRETEND that it would take her 24 hours to think of how I could improve!

The next day at one o'clock I found out that this employee had gone home and spent one hour composing a list. I think it was the first time she ever put in ANY effort after 5pm! She had 23 areas that I needed to improve upon! The others at the meeting had suggestions as well but not to that extent.

Before the meeting I had informed everyone that their job was secure whatever their suggestions were. I wanted them to be brutally honest so I could get better and the company could improve. They were indeed honest and because they trusted me did not fear for their job with their statements. Of the suggestions, 75% were good and accurate. 25% were totally off base and they were wrong. With that said, not once in the meeting did I defend myself. With every suggestion (right or wrong), I thanked them and wrote it down in my notebook. Never once did I defend or explain myself.

It was a very productive meeting for everyone involved. My employees felt valued because I came to them for advice and the company improved because we changed some procedures. It is hard to accept constructive criticism. However, if you desire to be successful it is quality you must embody.

Ask for constructive criticism from those around you. They will feel valued that you asked and most likely you will become a better friend, manager or spouse because of it. Don't defend yourself... just get better.

2. Quotes of The Week

GROWTH

"But as I look back at my life, it is easy to see that the times when my wisdom and understanding grew to new levels; those times when I approached becoming the person I long to be; it was always the times that followed negative circumstances." -- Vic Johnson

"Let a person rejoice when he is confronted with obstacles, for it means that he has reached the end of some particular line of indifference or folly, and is now called upon to summon up all his energy and intelligence in order to extricate himself, and to find a better way; that the powers within him are crying out for greater freedom, for enlarged exercise and scope." -- James Allen

"It is the Law that any difficulties that can come to you at any time, no matter what they are, must be exactly what you need most at the moment, to enable you to take the next step forward by overcoming them. The only real misfortune, the only real tragedy, comes when we suffer without learning the lesson." -- Emmet Fox

"A man may fulfill the object of his existence by asking a question he cannot answer, and attempting a task he cannot achieve." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes

"Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely." -- Karen Kaiser Clark

"Treat people as if they were what they ought to be and you will help them become what they are capable of becoming." -- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

"The real tragedy is the tragedy of the man who never in his life braces himself for his one supreme effort, who never stretches to his full capacity, never stands up to his full stature." -- Arnold Bennett

"We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be." -- May Sarton

"Maturity is the capacity to endure uncertainty." -- John Finley

"There are many ways of going forward, but only one way of standing still." -- Franklin D. Roosevelt

"As long as we are persistent in our pursuit of our deepest destiny, we will continue to grow. We cannot choose the day or time when we will fully bloom. It happens in its own time." -- Denis Waitley

3. From Motivation to Motive-Action by Denis Waitley

With the passing of every year, each of us needs to understand the magnitude of social and economic change in the world. In the past, change in business and social life was incremental and a set of personal strategies for achieving excellence was not required. Today, in the knowledge-based world, where change is the rule, a set of personal strategies is essential for success, even survival. Never again will you be able to go to your place of business on autopilot, comfortable and secure that the organization, state or government will provide for and look after you. You must look in the mirror when you ask who is responsible for your success or failure. You must become a lifelong learner and leader, for to be a follower is to fall hopelessly behind the pace of progress. The power brokers in the new global arena will be the knowledge facilitators. Ignorance will be even more the tyrant and enslaver than in the past. As you look in the mirror to see the 21st Century you, there will also be another image standing beside you. It is your competition. Your competition, from now on, will be a hungry immigrant with a wireless, hand-held, digital assistant. Hungry for food, hungry for a home, for a new car, for security, for a college education. Hungry for knowledge. Smart, quick thinking, skilled and willing to do anything necessary to be competitive in the world marketplace. Working long hours and Saturdays, staying open later, serving customers better and more cheerfully. To be a player in the 21st Century you have to be willing to give more in service than you receive in payment.

These are the new rules in the game of life. These are the actions you must take to be a leader and a winner in your personal and professional life. By mastering these profoundly simple action steps, you will be positioned to be a change master in the new century.

Action Step Number One - Consider Yourself Self-Employed, But Be a Team Player. What this means is that you are your own Chief Executive Officer of your future. Start thinking of yourself as a service company with a single employee. You're a small company that puts your services to work for a larger company. Tomorrow you may sell those services to a different organization, but that doesn't mean you´re any less loyal to your current employer. Taking responsibility for yourself in this way does mean that you never equate your personal long-term interests with your employer´s.

The first idea is resolving not to suffer the fate of those who lost their jobs and found their skills were obsolete. The second is to begin immediately the process of protecting yourself against that possibility – by becoming proactive instead of reactive.

Ask yourself these questions:

How vulnerable am I? What trends must I watch? What information must I gain? What knowledge do I lack?

Again, think of yourself as a company. Set up a training department in your mind and make certain your top employee is updating his or her skills. Make sure you have your own private pension plan, knowing that you are responsible for your own financial security.

Entrusting the government or an employer, other than yourself, with your retirement income is like hiring a compulsive gambler as your accountant.

You're the CEO of your daily life who must have the vision to set your goals and allocate your resources. The mindset of being responsible for your own future used to be crucial only to the self-employed, but it has become essential for us all.
